Kirill Dmitriev, the special envoy of the Russian president for investments, proposed the construction of a railway tunnel between Russia and the USA through the Bering Strait, an 8 billion dollar project aimed at symbolizing the unity between the two countries. This 112 km transport corridor could be completed in less than eight years, with the potential to unlock joint exploration of natural resources in the Arctic region. Dmitriev emphasized that the initiative comes in the context of the revival of Russian-American relations, following a phone conversation between Putin and Trump.
He also mentioned that the technology of The Boring Company, owned by Elon Musk, could reduce construction costs. The idea of connecting the two countries through a tunnel has existed for over 150 years, but it has never been implemented. Dmitriev compared his proposal to a similar project from the Cold War, highlighting the importance of connecting Russia and the USA for the first time in history.
