Russian envoy Kirill Dmitriev claims that Moscow and Berlin could reopen the Nord Stream gas pipeline

Russia and Germany could jointly resume operations of the Nord Stream pipeline, which was sabotaged four years ago, Kirill Dmitriev, special envoy to Russian President Vladimir Putin and director general of the Russian Direct Investment Fund, said. The statement was made on the X platform, in a message in which he also endorsed the position of the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party on energy cooperation with Russia.

Dmitriev was commenting on a post by Tino Chrupalla, AfD co-chair, who called for an international investigation into the explosions at Nord Stream and Nord Stream 2. The German party leader also called for the pipelines to be repaired and reopened.

The sabotage took place on September 26, 2022, when major damage was reported to three of the Nord Stream branches and to the Nord Stream 2 pipeline, which had not been put into operation. Russia's Prosecutor General's Office subsequently opened a criminal case over an alleged act of international terrorism.

The pipelines were built to transport natural gas from Russia to Germany. The Russian envoy's statement is, for now, a political proposal, with no official announcement regarding negotiations or repair work.
