Rome has become the most recent European capital to impose a speed limit of 30 km/h in its historic center, reducing the previous limit of 50 km/h. This measure, which came into effect on Thursday, aims to reduce traffic accidents and pollution, considering that excessive speed contributes to 7.5% of accidents in the city. Eugenio Patane, the head of transport in Rome, emphasized that the city was built for cars, but this model is no longer viable.

Rome joins other European capitals, such as London and Paris, which have adopted similar measures to create safer streets. Additionally, Bologna has reported a significant decrease in accidents after imposing a speed limit of 30 km/h. Mayor Roberto Gualtieri has installed speed cameras and encouraged the reduction of personal car use, in the context of safety and emissions concerns.
