Bucharest, among the European capitals where public transport has become over 10% more expensive in the last three years

A Greenpeace study analyzing the 27 member states of the European Union shows that Bucharest is among the capitals where long-term public transport passes have become at least 10% more expensive compared with 2023.

The research compared the prices and affordability of monthly and annual passes, taking into account the area covered, the means of transport included, discounts for vulnerable groups, and VAT. The highest monthly costs are in London, where a pass costs 162 euros, followed by Amsterdam, at 107 euros, and Paris, at 77 euros.

The largest increases were recorded in Nicosia, where fares rose by 67%, Amsterdam – 55%, Madrid – 50%, and Bratislava – 32%. In Berlin, the increase was 29%, while in Vienna it was 26%. Bucharest is included in the same category as Copenhagen, Vilnius, Brussels, and London.

There are also capitals where transport has become cheaper compared with 2023. In Dublin, prices fell by 42.5%, in Oslo by 11.5%, in Bern by 6.6%, and in Budapest by 5.8%.

Greenpeace supports the expansion of affordable “climate ticket” passes to encourage public transport and reduce dependence on cars and airplanes.
