Reza Pahlavi, the son of Iran’s former shah, received a freedom award in Frankfurt, Germany, on Saturday, November 7, 2026, presented by the Friedrich Naumann Foundation. The distinction, awarded in recognition of his support for the freedom of the Iranian people, has sparked controversy, with critics challenging his legitimacy to represent Iran.

Thousands of supporters gathered in the city’s streets to cheer Pahlavi. According to information from the scene, demonstrators waved the Iranian imperial flag, which was replaced after the 1979 Islamic Revolution, as well as Israeli flags. Organizers estimated that more than 20,000 people attended.

Steffen Saebisch, chairman of the foundation’s board of directors, told him that the award belonged to the Iranian people and that Pahlavi should keep it until he could hand it over to their elected representatives. Pahlavi said he was merely the temporary custodian of the distinction and hoped to take it to Tehran in the future.

The award has been criticized by representatives of the Iranian opposition in exile, who described Pahlavi as an unelected and contested figure. Frankfurt’s Social Democrats boycotted the ceremony, arguing that he is not a legitimate representative of the Iranian people.
