The Australian federal police have made a record seizure of 2.7 tons of cocaine, discovered in underground bunkers in Londonderry, western Sydney, during a raid.
The drugs, hidden in plastic containers under false floors in three shipping containers, have an estimated value of 816 million Australian dollars (571 million US dollars). Two men, aged 21 and 25, were arrested while trying to flee from police, being charged with possession of a commercial quantity of illegally imported drugs, an offense that can lead to life imprisonment.
The police stated that the drugs were introduced into Australia through Midge Point, North Queensland, for a Sydney organized crime group. This seizure comes after a report showing an increase in cocaine consumption in Australia, estimated at 7.98 tons between August 2024 and August 2025. Investigations are ongoing to identify the criminal network involved.
