A new survey shows that a record number of North Korean defectors are happy in South Korea, with freedom a key factor.

The survey, based on interviews with more than 2,500 refugees who have arrived since January 1997, shows that 79.3% say they are "satisfied" with life in their new environment, up from 72.5% in 2018. Furthermore, 41% of defectors attribute their happiness to "the ability to live in freedom".
