Pubs in England and Wales will have extended hours until 5 a.m. on Monday, due to the England vs. Mexico match in the World Cup, thanks to the intervention of Labour leader Keir Starmer.

This decision comes after the team's victory against the Democratic Republic of Congo, securing their place in the knockout stages. The Home Secretary will use legislative powers to allow the extension of operating hours for establishments serving alcohol in the case of exceptionally important events.

Starmer emphasized the importance of supporting the team, stating that pubs are essential for communities. Although the government had already relaxed licensing rules, some pubs were unable to obtain temporary licenses to remain open.

Pressure from MPs and pub owners led to the change in the initial decision, ensuring that supporters can cheer on the England team in optimal conditions.
