Ukrainian and Russian officials concluded a first day of negotiations in Abu Dhabi on Wednesday, mediated by the U.S., with results considered "substantial and productive" by Rustem Umerov, Ukraine's chief negotiator.
The discussions focus on concrete measures, in the context of ongoing fighting in the conflict between the two countries. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky emphasized the importance of these negotiations leading to a real peace, warning that Russia should not take advantage of the ceasefire. He also estimated Ukrainian losses at around 55,000 soldiers. Despite the discussions, Russia continued its attacks, including on a market in eastern Ukraine.
The negotiations are taking place against the backdrop of major demands from Moscow, including the withdrawal of Ukrainian troops from Donetsk, which Ukraine rejects.
