At the Victoria Palace, the Prime Minister of Romania, Ilie Bolojan, received the visit of the European Commissioner for Justice, Michael McGrath. The discussions addressed essential themes related to the rule of law, the functioning of the judicial system, and the reforms undertaken by Romania in a European context.
Bolojan emphasized the recent reforms that have strengthened the independence of the judiciary, reducing the political influence in the management of judges' careers. An important topic was the reform of service pensions, considering the budgetary pressures and the differences between pensions in the judiciary and the national average.
McGrath appreciated Romania's cooperation in the rule of law process and emphasized the importance of constructive dialogue with the European Commission. There was also discussion about the Commission's support for implementing the recommendations from the Rule of Law Report 2025, including ensuring the independence of prosecutors and clarifying the statute of limitations. Romania and the European Commission will continue to collaborate for an efficient and credible judicial system.
