Pope Leo XIV has announced that he will undergo surgery in the coming days to remove a nodule discovered in one of his lungs. The pontiff said the growth was identified at a “very early and well-localized” stage.
The announcement was made after the Angelus prayer, from the window of the Apostolic Palace, where the Pope addressed the faithful. He explained that the nodule was detected during recent medical checkups.
“Recently, during some checkups, doctors noticed a nodule in my lung. It was discovered at a very early and well-localized stage,” Pope Leo XIV said.
The doctors caring for him consider surgery advisable, and the pontiff said he had decided to follow their recommendations and undergo the procedure in the coming period. According to information cited by Agerpres, which quotes the EFE news agency, the surgery is intended to remove the nodule. No details were provided about its subsequent course, and the Vatican offered no further information about the procedure.
