Pope Leo XIV arrived Tuesday at Gemelli Hospital in Rome, where he was scheduled to undergo surgery to remove a lung nodule discovered during routine checkups. Tests conducted after the procedure will determine whether the lesion is malignant and whether additional treatments are necessary.
The 71-year-old pontiff said he feels well and chose to have the operation as soon as possible so as not to alter his travel plans. He will remain hospitalized for approximately one week, and the Vatican has canceled his audiences through October 20. His recovery could allow him to make the planned visit to Uruguay, Argentina, and Peru between November 6 and 17. The trip would be the longest of his pontificate, covering more than 30,000 kilometers.
