Warsaw is preparing a compensation request against Russia for the atrocities committed during the period of Soviet domination, inspired by the request of 1.3 trillion euros addressed to Germany for the crimes of World War II. Bartosz Gondek, the director of an institute dedicated to investigating Russian historical crimes, stated that the investigation will be broader than that regarding Nazi brutality, considering the Soviet influence over Poland for more than four decades. This request could escalate tensions with Moscow, in the context where Poland accuses Russia of cyberattacks and espionage. Gondek mentioned that it is premature to discuss the amount requested from Russia, emphasizing the difficulties encountered in accessing Russian archives. Meanwhile, Poland's request to Germany remains unresolved, and Germany claims that the issue of reparations has been legally closed. The opposition party Law and Justice (PiS) has accused Donald Tusk's government of not having acted sufficiently regarding reparations from Berlin. The Kremlin has denied the atrocities committed by the Soviets but acknowledged in 2010 that Stalin ordered the Katyn massacre. In the current context, Tusk seems to pursue two political objectives: countering Russian disinformation and strengthening his image as a defender of Polish interests. The President of Poland, Karol Nawrocki, continues to demand reparations from Germany, while the German Chancellor has made conciliatory gestures, acknowledging Germany's historical responsibility towards Poland.
