The Trump administration wants to build a military base for 5,000 people in Gaza, according to procurement documents from the Peace Council consulted by The Guardian. The move is contested by some specialists who consider it an act of occupation.

President Nicușor Dan represents Romania as an observer and is expected to even deliver a speech at the first meeting of the Council, which discusses the reconstruction of the devastated territory.

The military base, intended for an International Stabilization Force (ISF), will have a capacity of 5,000 people and will include observation towers, a weapons range, and bunkers.

Although the UN has authorized the ISF to ensure security in the area, questions persist regarding land ownership and the legality of the construction. Critics, such as lawyer Diana Buttu, emphasize that such an action without the approval of the Palestinian government is problematic. Although the Peace Council has members from over 20 countries, many leaders have declined Trump's invitation, and funding and governance structures remain unclear. Nicușor Dan stated that his presence in Washington is meant to strengthen relations with the American administration.
