Paris will invest €200 million by 2032 to expand its bicycle-lane network and improve safety at dangerous intersections, amid a rapid increase in the number of cyclists in the French capital.
The municipal plan, presented Wednesday by Mayor Emmanuel Grégoire, calls for the construction of an additional 140 kilometers of bicycle lanes and the adaptation of 220 kilometers of one-way streets so that cyclists can travel in both directions. A further 420 intersections are to be redesigned to reduce risks.
Paris currently has 454 kilometers of dedicated bicycle lanes and a total network of approximately 1,600 kilometers when marked lanes on roads are included. The number of cyclists has increased by 47% since 2020, and one in ten residents commutes by bicycle.
The municipality also intends to increase the number of police officers monitoring traffic. Cars are involved in approximately half of all accidents involving cyclists. In 2024, more than 1,000 cyclists were injured, 67 seriously, while two died.
