The Panamanian government has imposed a state of emergency in the province of Bocas del Toro, hit by violent protests against pension reform, which have led to looting and vandalism. Constitutional rights will be suspended for five days, allowing police to make arrests without warrants. The protests began when the banana workers' union went on strike and tensions rose after thousands of Chiquita Brands employees were laid off. Workers blocked roads and damaged local infrastructure.
