The eruption of Semeru volcano, the highest volcano on the island of Java in Indonesia, began on Wednesday and led to the evacuation of over 1,000 people, mainly locals and tourists. Authorities raised the alert level to maximum after the volcano projected lava particles over 13 kilometers around the crater. Although volcanic activity significantly decreased on Thursday, it remains fluctuating. Approximately 900 people have been sheltered in schools and mosques, while another 190, mostly tourists, were evacuated from a campsite. Indonesia, located on the "Ring of Fire" of the Pacific, has about 130 active volcanoes and has been affected by devastating eruptions in the past, including one in 2021 that resulted in over 50 deaths.
