White House spokesman John Kirby said more than 1,000 North Korean soldiers were killed or wounded in attacks on Ukrainian positions in Kursk. He stressed that North Korean forces appear to be used as 'sacrificial' troops by Russian and North Korean military leaders. The involvement of this contingent of North Korean soldiers in the conflict in Ukraine represents a major escalation of the situation.
