The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has published a final report regarding the implosion of the submersible Titan, which occurred in the summer of 2023, resulting in the deaths of five people. The report highlights that the faulty engineering of the submersible, constructed from carbon fiber, was the main factor in the tragedy, with the fuselage failing under ocean pressure. NTSB criticized OceanGate, the company that owned Titan, for not conducting adequate testing and for not being aware of the risks of using the submersible for deep-sea expeditions.
The report also suggests that the wreck could have been located more quickly if OceanGate had followed emergency protocols. The U.S. Coast Guard also confirmed that OceanGate's safety procedures were severely flawed. Among the victims of the accident were OceanGate's founder, Stockton Rush, and renowned diver Paul-Henri Nargeolet. Titan had conducted several expeditions to the wreck of the Titanic prior to the tragedy.
