The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has summoned Tesla to provide detailed documents as part of an investigation into retractable door handles, which could trap passengers inside the vehicle. The investigation was initiated after incidents were reported in which passengers, including children, were trapped in overheated vehicles due to malfunctions in the door opening system. NHTSA has received 16 complaints related to 2021 Tesla Model Y vehicles, and Tesla's chief designer has acknowledged the issues and announced plans to modify the design. Additionally, other automakers, such as Rivian and Volkswagen, are analyzing or rejecting this type of design, and China is preparing new safety standards for door handles. Tesla has until December 10 to respond to NHTSA's requests, risking significant fines in case of non-compliance.
