North Korea has launched several ballistic missiles towards the Sea of Japan, in the context of the discussions between the USA and South Korea regarding defense against Pyongyang.

On Tuesday, North Korea conducted ballistic missile launches, likely with a short-range capability, towards the sea, according to statements from South Korea and Japan. The missiles were launched from near the North Korean capital, Pyongyang, and flew approximately 350 kilometers, without affecting Japan, according to Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi.

These tests come amid heightened interest in short-range ballistic missiles, part of North Korea's tactical nuclear arsenal, which it believes are necessary to protect itself from perceived threats from the U.S. and South Korea.

Additionally, the launches occurred during the visit of a senior U.S. Department of Defense official to South Korea, as part of discussions on modernizing the military alliance.
