Nigeria's Foreign Minister, Yusuf Tuggar, assured that the Nigerian Constitution guarantees religious freedom and does not tolerate religious persecution, in response to threats from American President Donald Trump regarding a military intervention to protect Christians in Nigeria. Tuggar emphasized that federal, regional, or local authorities cannot support religious persecution in any way.

Nigeria, split between a predominantly Muslim north and a predominantly Christian south, faces violent conflicts affecting both religious communities. The minister warned that division along religious lines, similar to that in Sudan, would not resolve existing issues. He also mentioned the security challenges Nigeria faces, including the activities of the jihadist group Boko Haram, which has caused thousands of deaths and millions of displacements. Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has proposed a meeting to discuss the situation.
