U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Tuesday, during a visit to India, that the United States is not “deliberately” withholding military supplies destined for Ukraine and that President Donald Trump is upset by accusations that his administration is seeking to harm Kyiv.
Rubio explained that arms deliveries must be managed in accordance with U.S. commitments to other partners and its own military needs. He also rejected reports that Trump had ordered the suspension of intelligence sharing with Ukraine, saying the president has repeatedly denied this.
The statements came after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky accused Washington of intentionally delaying the delivery of interceptor missiles needed to defend against Russian attacks. According to Reuters, Rubio acknowledged that a batch of interceptors purchased for Ukraine through the PURL program may not have been delivered.
Relations between Washington and Kyiv are also strained by Trump’s growing closeness to Vladimir Putin, as well as the American president’s criticism of Ukrainian attacks on Russian refineries.
In India, Rubio also praised the country’s progress in diversifying its energy sources and reducing its dependence on Russia.
