The elections were triggered after Farage resigned from parliament last month to seek a new mandate from voters, in what he described as a "war" against the "establishment." He accused political rivals and the press of trying to discredit him due to the gifts he received from wealthy donors.
The parliamentary ethics oversight authority is investigating a donation of five million pounds (5.7 million euros) that Farage received from a billionaire who made his fortune in cryptocurrencies, Christopher Harborne, shortly before his election in Clacton in July 2024.
According to the newspaper "The Times," he also reportedly received an undeclared donation from George Cottrell, a cryptocurrency entrepreneur convicted of fraud in the United States in 2017.
