Apple’s new CEO, John Ternus, is considering major changes to how the company develops and launches products in order to keep pace with rivals in the age of artificial intelligence. According to sources cited by Bloomberg, Ternus has discussed internally accelerating launches and testing some new products on the market more quickly.
Among the ideas under consideration is moving away from reliance on the traditional spring and fall launch schedule, allowing Apple to introduce products throughout the year. The company is preparing camera-equipped AirPods, its first smart glasses and an updated iPhone for next year, while Ternus is already reviewing the presentation schedule.
Another direction pursued by the CEO is reducing layers of middle management to bring engineers closer to executive leadership. Over the past two weeks, the hardware engineering division has begun laying off program managers responsible for deadlines and team coordination. Apple has also made layoffs in other divisions.
Ternus has long supported a more flexible organizational structure and believes the company needs to accomplish more with fewer employees. Company sources, however, warn that changing development processes established over decades could take more time.
