Neuschwanstein Castle, built in the 19th century and inspired by German legends, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, along with other residences of King Ludwig II of Bavaria. It welcomes almost 1.5 million tourists a year and is famous for its murals paying homage to Richard Wagner's opera. Other buildings such as Herrenchiemsee, Linderhof and Schachen have also been recognized. Louis II was ousted from power due to high construction costs and died in mysterious circumstances.
