The upper house of the Dutch parliament has approved a ban on firecrackers and fireworks, a measure already backed by the lower house. The decision comes in response to an increase in violence associated with the use of these devices, which has led to injuries and even deaths. Although this year will be the last in which they can be used, the authorities guarantee that New Year's Eve parties will remain festive by allowing fireworks organized with a permit. The change was supported by various organizations and was made possible by changes in the position of the People's Party for Freedom and Democracy (VVD).
