The announcement was made on Wednesday evening by the right-wing Likud party, which specified that the current legislative term will end prematurely, and elections will take place on a date set by the Knesset committee, no sooner than 90 days after the law is adopted. The bill could be put to a vote on May 20, and the current term ends on October 27.

The decision to dissolve comes in response to the dissatisfaction of ultra-Orthodox parties, which have criticized Netanyahu for inaction regarding a law that would exempt young students in yeshivas from military obligations. The Likud announcement anticipated a similar initiative from the opposition, allowing Netanyahu to control the electoral calendar.
