Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Sunday ordered an investigation and criminal prosecution of participants in the documentary “NAZA,” which presents testimony about the killing of civilians in Gaza. The investigation concerns alleged “serious crimes against Israel’s security,” as well as accusations of criminal defamation and harming the country’s diplomatic interests.
The film, produced by The Guardian, is based on the anonymous testimony of 24 Israeli military personnel and intelligence officials. The documentary describes the alleged authorization of attacks in which dozens or hundreds of civilians may have been considered “collateral damage” following Hamas’s October 7, 2023, attack.
“NAZA” is the acronym reportedly used, according to the investigation, to estimate the number of civilians who could be killed in an attack. The film also claims that the Israeli military may have used artificial intelligence models to identify potential militants and bombed evacuated areas, even though civilians were still present there.
Netanyahu called for measures to be taken by the chief of staff, the director of Shin Bet, and the attorney general. The Israeli military rejects allegations of deliberately targeting civilians and says its regulations require minimizing casualties.
