Narges Mohammadi, the human rights activist and Nobel Peace Prize laureate in 2023, has been released on bail after being incarcerated in Iran since December last year. Mohammadi, at the age of 54, was arrested for criticizing the Iranian religious authorities and has suffered a serious deterioration in health while in prison, including two heart attacks. The Iranian authorities decided to transfer her to a hospital in Tehran for appropriate medical treatment.
Her foundation announced that the release was achieved in exchange for a substantial bail, without specifying the amount. Mohammadi is known for her over twenty-year fight against the death penalty and the mandatory wearing of the veil by women in Iran, constantly criticizing the Islamic regime in Tehran.
