Narges Mohammadi, a women's rights activist and laureate of the Nobel Peace Prize in 2023, was violently arrested by Iranian security forces in the city of Mashhad, according to her foundation. The Nobel Committee expressed deep concern over her arrest and called on the authorities to ensure her safety and release her unconditionally.
Mohammadi, who was temporarily released from prison in December 2024, was detained during a memorial ceremony for a deceased lawyer, where other activists were also arrested. Her husband stated that the arrest represents a violation of human rights and an intensification of the authorities' repression. Mohammadi has been arrested 13 times and sentenced to over 36 years in prison, continuing to oppose the Iranian regime through her activities.
