Meta has announced that the Messenger app for desktop, available on Windows and macOS, will be permanently closed on December 15. Users will be redirected to the web versions of Facebook and Messenger to access their conversations. Although the company has not provided an official explanation for this decision, users will receive notifications about the app's closure and will be automatically blocked after the deadline.
Meta recommends users to enable the secure storage feature and set a PIN to save their conversations by accessing the Privacy & Safety section in the Messenger settings. Messenger was separated from the main Facebook app in 2014, and in 2023, Meta also abandoned plans for complete integration between Messenger and Instagram Direct.
