The German Chancellor Friedrich Merz stated that his relationship with American President Donald Trump remains positive, despite differences of opinion regarding the war in Iran. Merz expressed his concern about the economic effects of the conflict in the Middle East, mentioning that the closure of the Strait of Hormuz affects Germany's and Europe's energy supply.

Mutual criticisms arose, with Trump accusing Merz of claiming that Iran should possess nuclear weapons, a misinterpretation of his position. Merz emphasized that Iranian leaders humiliate the United States and questioned the American strategy in the region, comparing the situation to the conflicts in Afghanistan and Iraq. Trump also criticized NATO allies for their lack of action in opening the Strait of Hormuz, which has led to disruptions in global energy markets.
