Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney denounced on Sunday the agreement between Washington and Moscow on the delivery of Russian diesel, during a phone call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Ottawa maintains that the agreement undermines the efforts of Ukraine, Canada, and their allies to establish peace and stability in Europe.
According to the statement issued after the discussion, Carney warned that the agreement would provide Russia with additional revenues, which could contribute to financing the war against Ukraine. The Canadian prime minister thus reiterated Canada's opposition to measures that could reduce economic pressure on Moscow.
The agreement was announced on Friday by U.S. President Donald Trump. He stated that Russia had agreed to supply diesel to global markets, while his administration temporarily lifted the U.S. sanctions imposed on Russian fuel. The measures had been introduced to limit Moscow's revenues and its ability to finance the war in Ukraine.
