Maria del Carmen Abascal, known as Maricarmen, died in a hospital in Spain, two weeks after she was forcibly evicted from the apartment where she had lived for over 70 years. The case of the 87-year-old woman sparked massive protests and became a symbol of the housing crisis in the country.
The apartment had been purchased by an investment firm, which intended to increase the rent by 230%. The eviction was carried out in the presence of police, who used tear gas against the protesters. Maricarmen was carried out of the home on a stretcher, and on the same day approximately 10,000 people protested in Madrid.
The company later offered her the possibility of returning to the apartment, but Madrid’s tenants’ union announced that the solution had come too late. The woman died just a few hours before she was due to sign the new rental contract.
Her story sparked massive demonstrations in Spain, putting pressure on the minority left-wing government to take urgent action. However, the rejection of these measures in Parliament last week forced Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez to call early elections for November 29.
In Madrid, hundreds of demonstrators chanted: “Maricarmen lives on, the struggle continues.”
