Britain and the European Union have agreed on a draft sanitary and phytosanitary agreement that would eliminate a large part of the controls and formalities introduced after Brexit for trade in food and agricultural products. The document, sent to member states ahead of the United Kingdom-EU summit at the end of the month, is due to be examined by European ambassadors on Wednesday.

The agreement, considered the central element of the “Brexit reset,” would eliminate sanitary and phytosanitary certificates, some inspection fees and other checks. This would allow British exporters to resume shipments to the EU of fresh sausages, burgers, seafood from British waters and seed potatoes.

In return, London would accept dynamic alignment with European rules on plants, animals and food products. The measure could also allow the reintroduction of pet passports and the linking of the British and European emissions trading systems.

The British government estimates that the agreement would generate economic benefits of approximately £5.1 billion annually. The business community supports the initiative, believing that it would reduce costs, delays and bureaucracy for companies affected by the new trade rules.
