Marco Rubio, American Secretary of State, travels to Beijing on Tuesday alongside President Donald Trump, despite the sanctions imposed by China, which target him directly.
Marco Rubio, of Cuban descent and a fervent critic of communism, has been an active supporter of sanctions against China, particularly regarding the use of forced labor of Uyghurs and the repression in Hong Kong. These firm positions have led to two sanctions from China, including a ban on entering Chinese territory. Recently, Beijing modified the transliteration of his name to avoid the diplomatic obstacle created by the sanctions.
Since taking office, Rubio has aligned with Trump's policy, favoring the strengthening of trade relations with China, while issues related to human rights have been neglected. Last year, Rubio reaffirmed support for Taiwan, emphasizing that the Trump administration will not negotiate the future of the island within a trade agreement with Beijing.
