Nicolás Maduro, the president of Venezuela, has asked the Supreme Court to withdraw the citizenship of anyone who requests a foreign invasion, in the context of the military deployment of the United States in the Caribbean. He mentioned that he has submitted a constitutional request to allow the withdrawal of citizenship from "traitors of the homeland" who collaborate with foreign forces. Maduro accused opposition leader Leopoldo López of encouraging an American invasion and specifically requested the withdrawal of his citizenship. Although the judiciary has not yet ruled, the Constitution prohibits the withdrawal of citizenship. Maduro also accused other opposition figures, including María Corina Machado, of requesting an invasion.
