Context: Macron announced judicial measures and convened crisis talks after the escalation of protests in France
Before the resignation of the Interior Minister, Emmanuel Macron condemned the violence that occurred during the demonstrations and announced that the people who attacked institutions and shops would be prosecuted. The message came amid escalating clashes between protesters and law enforcement, and the president called for unity against those who, in his view, are trying to cause chaos and undermine institutions.
At the same time, Macron requested clarifications regarding how the incidents had been handled and tasked the Government with analyzing the course of the violence, including why the intelligence services had not anticipated its scale. In parallel, a crisis meeting was convened in Paris to discuss the spread of protests related to conditions in education and the risk that the discontent might spread to other segments of society.
The protests were initiated by pupils and students, who called for better-equipped schools and improved conditions, and were subsequently joined by trade unions, parents, and teachers. In the preceding days, the demonstrations degenerated into violence, and the authorities expressed concern that the discontent, also fueled by rising fuel prices and the increasing cost of living, could continue to spread.
