French President Emmanuel Macron vehemently criticized social media platforms and their directors, rejecting the idea that a lack of regulation defends freedom of expression.

In the context of a speech delivered in India, Macron emphasized that the transparency of algorithms is essential, stating that "freedom of expression is a total aberration" if users do not know how they are guided by them. Macron highlighted the biases of algorithms and their impact on democracy, stressing that a lack of knowledge about how algorithms are created and tested can lead to significant harm.

He also called for restricting access to social media for young people, in the context of a broader debate between Europe and the United States regarding technological regulations and freedom of expression.
