Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has repeated Moscow’s accusations regarding the cancellation of Romania’s electoral process in an interview with the online project “Sama Menshova.” The statements were made as the Russian diplomat claimed that the European Union was preparing observers for State Duma elections scheduled for September 18–20, 2026.

Lavrov claimed that, after an initial electoral stage that he said had been deemed fair by observers, the winner was “removed from the race” because he promoted Romania’s national interests rather than blindly following “Brussels’ orders.” The statement refers to Călin Georgescu, although he was not explicitly named in the fragment quoted by the Russian news agency TASS.

This is not Lavrov’s first reference to the Romanian case. In March 2025, he claimed that Constitutional Court judges had acquitted Georgescu, even though the Constitutional Court had annulled the electoral process. Bucharest has repeatedly rejected Moscow’s claims, describing them as disinformation intended to undermine confidence in state institutions.⁣arnissaa?
