The mobile phone operator Kyivstar, the largest in Ukraine, has launched Starlink's 'direct-to-cell' satellite technology, thus becoming the first in Europe to utilize this innovation. This initiative aims to keep millions of users connected in the context of massive power outages and the deteriorated infrastructure due to the war. In the first phase, the service will allow SMS sending, while voice calls and mobile data will be available next year, according to an agreement with Starlink and the Veon group. CEO Oleksandr Komarov emphasized the importance of connectivity for user safety. Kyivstar serves approximately 22.5 million users, and the new technology will ensure connectivity in areas affected by destruction, facilitating rescue operations. The company has also improved the network's autonomy by installing batteries and generators. Since the beginning of the war, Ukraine's energy infrastructure has been frequently attacked, causing extensive power outages. The 'direct-to-cell' technology allows mobile phones to connect directly to satellites, which is also essential for the communications of the Ukrainian army.
