According to The Telegraph, panic has gripped the Kremlin, as Putin "has run out of cards to play," while the US president, Donald Trump, "tightens the screw."

This month, the Federal Security Service of Russia (FSB) accused Khodorkovsky, who now lives in exile in London, and 22 members of the Russian Anti-War Committee of plotting a coup.

Experts believe this is a sign of a new sense of vulnerability for the Russian leader. "It shows that the Kremlin is paranoid. Putin is looking for enemies to consolidate his regime," said former US ambassador to Ukraine, John Herbst.
