The Islamic resistance movement Hamas announced the election of Khalil al-Hayya to lead the political office, replacing Yahya Sinwar, who was killed in October 2024 in the Gaza Strip. Sinwar, considered the architect of the October 7, 2023 attack on Israel, took over leadership after the assassination of Ismail Haniyeh in July 2024.
Khalil al-Hayya, born in 1960, is the chief negotiator of the movement and was the target of an assassination attempt in 2025. His election was confirmed with an overwhelming majority, and his duties will begin next week. The political office of Hamas will meet in Istanbul to form committees and restructure the leadership. After Sinwar's death, Hamas opted for a collective leadership, and the Ezzedin Al-Qassam Brigades declared their full support for al-Hayya.
