The Kazakh company KazMunayGas (KMG) and Lukoil from Russia, recently sanctioned by the USA, continue to collaborate on joint projects according to contractual obligations. An official from KMG stated that a comprehensive assessment of the impact of the sanctions on the projects is being carried out, from legal, financial, and technical perspectives. KMG emphasized that work continues in compliance with national legislation and that all agreements contain clauses regarding sanctions, establishing procedures for such situations, although the details are confidential.

In October, the USA imposed sanctions against Lukoil and Rosneft, accusing Russia of a lack of commitment in the conflict in Ukraine. KMG controls the Rompetrol group, which operates refineries in Romania and has activities in Bulgaria, the Republic of Moldova, and Georgia.
