Russian political scientist Sergey Karaganov claims that Germany, Romania and Poland could be the first European countries targeted by Russia in the event of an escalation of the war, possibly as soon as next year. He made the statements in a recent interview, in which he said that Moscow is discussing tougher attacks against Ukraine and European states it considers involved in supporting Kyiv.

Karaganov identified Germany as the main threat and mentioned Romania in the context of arms deliveries to Ukraine. He advocated initially using conventional weapons and argued that Russia should also be prepared to use nuclear weapons, although he acknowledged the catastrophic consequences of such a scenario.

The political scientist criticized Moscow for not attacking decision-making centers in Kyiv and supported the annexation of Ukrainian regions, including Odesa. He also accused the United States of deliberately provoking the war in order to weaken Russia.

Karaganov is close to the Kremlin and is on the sanctions lists of the European Union and other states. His statements represent personal views and do not constitute official confirmation of Russian military plans.
