Federal Judge Alvin Hellerstein, at the age of 92, will preside over the criminal trial against Nicolás Maduro, the former Venezuelan leader, who was captured by U.S. special forces and brought to Manhattan. Maduro is accused of drug trafficking, corruption, and terrorism-related offenses.
The trial will take place at the Southern District Court of New York, known for handling national security and international crime cases. Hellerstein, appointed judge in 1998 by President Bill Clinton, has a reputation as a tough judge and has handled significant cases, including those related to the September 11 attacks. He has also made decisions that limited executive power, including blocking the deportation of pro-Palestinian activists. Maduro and his wife are expected to have a preliminary hearing next month.
