The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) announced on Tuesday the lifting of the warning regarding the risk of a major earthquake, a week after the 7.5 magnitude earthquake struck the northern coast of Japan on December 8.

This earthquake generated tsunami waves of up to 70 centimeters and injured over 40 people, without causing major damage. The JMA had previously issued a rare warning for an increased risk of 'mega-earthquake', defined as an earthquake of magnitude 8 or greater, urging residents to prepare for a possible evacuation. Although the special alert period has expired, JMA officials emphasized that the risk of earthquakes remains, and vigilance is essential. A mega-earthquake in the Hokkaido-Sanriku region could cause a devastating tsunami of 30 meters, with possible loss of life and significant economic damage.
