Italy intends to join President Donald Trump's Peace Council as an observer country, Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni stated during a visit to Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Although Meloni emphasized that for constitutional reasons Italy cannot become a member of this body, she considers the invitation to participate as an observer a "good solution." The Prime Minister highlighted the importance of an Italian and European presence in stabilizing the situation in the Middle East. The Peace Council, launched by Trump at the World Economic Forum in Davos, was initially created to oversee the reconstruction of the Gaza Strip, but its current purposes remain unclear. Many European countries perceive this council as an attempt to undermine the UN and refuse to participate, with Bulgaria and Hungary being the only EU states involved so far.
