After the devastating attacks on October 7, 2023, Israel created an elite unit called NILI, an acronym for 'Netzach Yisrael Lo Yeshaker', tasked with identifying and eliminating all Hamas members involved in the attack.
According to The Jerusalem Post, the unit targets both the executors and the leaders of the organization, having a list of 'thousands of names' of those involved. The Hamas attack resulted in the deaths of approximately 1,200 people and triggered a war in Gaza.
A former Shin Bet security service official, Shalom Ben Hanan, emphasized that the operation sends a clear message to future enemies of Israel. The methods for identifying suspects include facial recognition, analysis of social media images, and interrogation of Palestinian detainees.
The NILI unit has also expanded operations into Iran and Lebanon, targeting Hamas leaders. Following a ceasefire with Hamas, the unit's activity has been reduced, now operating with a limited number of agents.
